All Creatives, as Stated by Melissa de la Cruz, Impacted by Industry-Wide Strike

On July 13, SAG-AFTRA made history by officially voting to strike, joining forces with the WGA on the picket lines to advocate for improved compensation and working conditions. The impact of these strikes extends beyond just the film and television industry, as author Melissa de la Cruz discussed during the Books-to-Film Tie-In: An Insider Perspective panel at San Diego Comic-Con, moderated by Collider’s Perri Nemiroff.

During the panel, Cruz emphasized the significance of fair compensation for individuals in creative fields. She expressed her support for the ongoing strikes, expressing concern over the devaluation of workers and their contributions. Cruz also highlighted the long-term impact of the strikes, explaining that they are not only fighting for better treatment of current creatives, but also for future generations. She shared her personal connection to the cause, explaining how her parents supported her creative pursuits, and she wants the same for her child, wanting her to feel empowered in the world of creativity.

While Cruz is primarily known as an author, she also has a background in journalism, which gives her a unique perspective on the strikes. She discussed the decline of print media and the loss of journalism jobs and magazines. Cruz also acknowledged the challenges faced by lower-level employees in the publishing industry. Combined with the existing challenges in film and television, Cruz expressed her concern and described the situation as an “ugly fight.”

In addition to her career as an author, Cruz is closely tied to the Disney franchise through her New York Times bestselling series based on Disney’s Descendants. The series, consisting of four books, follows the children of well-known Disney villains and their experiences at a prep school. The series has also been adapted into three movies, with a spin-off movie in the works for Disney+.

Overall, Cruz’s full comments at the panel shed light on the importance of fair compensation in creative industries and the far-reaching impact of the ongoing strikes.
