ALBYN SCHOOL, on Queen’s Road, has initiated efforts to strengthen ties between state and independent schools in the region. The school hosted a Computing event on January 22, aimed at enhancing networking opportunities for Computing teachers from various schools in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
Teachers from local state schools such as Aberdeen Grammar School, Bridge of Don Academy, Dyce Academy, Harlaw Academy, Banchory Academy, Cults Academy, Portlethen Academy, independent school Robert Gordon’s College, and the University of Aberdeen attended the inaugural event.
Ian Simpson, Albyn School’s Head of Computing, emphasized the collaborative nature of the event, stating, “During the meeting, we discussed the National 5 and Higher assignments for this year and worked in teams on different aspects of the tasks to generate working solutions and identify areas where there might be queries or misunderstandings.”
The ongoing plan is to continue regular meetings across different venues to maximize the reach of the networking group.
Albyn School has a history of engaging in knowledge-sharing initiatives with regional schools. In the past year, the school opened its science labs to 24 teachers from Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire for the ‘Call Me a Chemist’ event, inspiring local primary school teachers who are not specialist science teachers.
Head of Chemistry, Catherine Imlah, highlighted the aim of the Chemistry event, saying, “I wanted to help support science education in all schools and help teachers gain inspiration and confidence.”
Each teacher received a resource pack containing worksheets for pupils, detailed instructions for experiments, links to supplementary resources, and information on science outcomes and benchmarks.
Due to high demand, Albyn School plans to host additional ‘Call Me a Chemist’ events, with the next session scheduled for February 2024.
Headmaster Stefan Horsman emphasized the school’s commitment to collaboration, stating, “Albyn School’s commitment to fostering collaboration between state and independent schools in Aberdeen is part of our educational mission.”
He added, “These events for Computing and Chemistry exemplify our dedication to creating a supportive ecosystem where educators can share expertise, resources, and inspiration. We believe that by working together, we can enhance the quality of education for all pupils in the region.”
