Alan Moore Endorses Milka Biscuits Again, Just Not By Name

BBC Maestro has been editing segments from their six-hour long Masterclass With Alan Moore videos to share on social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

BBC Maestro is cutting down their six-hour long Masterclass With Alan Moore series into smaller videos to be posted on social media platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. The selection of these shorter videos is quite interesting, one of which appears to be a quirky advertisement. Alan Moore mentions, “The three things that fuel my creativity the most are my constant desire to surpass every other writer, my love for tea, and of course, biscuits, especially those half-chocolate ones with a cow on the back.”

The biscuits he refers to are Milka biscuits, a Swiss brand of chocolate confectionery originating in Switzerland in 1901 under Suchard, and later produced in Lörrach, Germany. Milka became the top chocolate brand in Germany in the 1960s. In 1970, Suchard merged with Tobler to form Interfood, which then merged with the Jacobs coffee company in 1982. Kraft acquired the company in 1990 and spun it off into Mondelez International, a separate food division, in 2012.

The cow Alan Moore mentions is a lilac Simmental cow with a bell around its neck, often found in Alpine meadows.

This isn’t the first time Alan Moore has praised these biscuits, although he chooses not to mention the brand by name. However, even with his admiration, he finds them imperfect. In 2016, he revealed to The Really Very Serious Alan Moore Scholars’ Group, “These days, my love for biscuits is increasingly abstract and theoretical, much like my love for the comic medium. I find much of the actual product deeply disappointing on an aesthetic level. While the chocolate malted milk biscuit with the cow on the back will always be a timeless classic and a source of comfort, why hasn’t anyone created the obvious dark chocolate malted milk? We have spacecraft taking close-up pictures of Pluto, for God’s sake, and yet a different kind of chocolate on our beloved cow-adorned teatime treats seems to be too much to ask for.” Interestingly, such biscuits do exist, just not in the UK and without the cow logo. Maybe I should import a pack for him?

Alan Moore has endorsed other commercial products, albeit unofficially. His praise of Lush products in previous Christmas messages reportedly led to an increase in sales of their Big shampoo brand. Will the makers of Milka be influenced (or “moo-ed”) by such a demand?
