‘Across the Spider-Verse’ Achieves Unprecedented Global Box Office Success

In a year marked by disappointing performances from major superhero movies, both from Marvel and DC, one film has exceeded all expectations. Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has surpassed the $400 million milestone at the global box office in less than two weeks since its release. Just a few days ago, this animated superhero sequel surpassed its predecessor – 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, both domestically and globally.

The opening weekend for Across the Spider-Verse was anticipated to bring in around $80 million, but it ended up grossing a remarkable $120 million. This makes it the second-biggest debut of 2023, right after another underestimated animated hit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which remains the highest-grossing film of the year, earning over $1.3 billion at the global box office. After just 12 days in theaters, Across the Spider-Verse has earned $240 million domestically and an additional $164 million from international markets, reaching a total of $405 million globally.

Despite facing strong competition from Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in its second weekend, Across the Spider-Verse didn’t fall too far behind. The film experienced only a 54% drop in its sophomore weekend, which is considerably less than the 60-70% drops typically seen in live-action Marvel movies. It grossed $55 million during this weekend. In comparison, Into the Spider-Verse ended its run with $190 million domestically and $385 million worldwide. While this may not seem like a significant difference – the infamous flop Black Adam concluded its global run with just $9 million more – it’s worth noting that Into the Spider-Verse had a relatively modest production budget of $90 million, while Dwayne Johnson’s big DC movie reportedly cost $260 million. Despite Sony’s confidence in the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse didn’t receive a significantly higher production budget; it was reportedly made for $100 million (excluding marketing expenses).

Like its predecessor, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature thanks to its overwhelmingly positive reviews, Across the Spider-Verse is also a strong contender for awards. The film currently holds a “fresh” rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, a popular review aggregator. Collider’s own Ross Bonaime described it as “one of the best animated films in years” and suggested it could be considered the “best superhero film ever.”

Across the Spider-Verse follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) on an adventure that takes them through multiple universes, where they encounter different versions of Spider-Man. The film is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and co-written and co-produced by fan favorites Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It also features the voices of Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac.
