Truecaller has announced that it will soon make its caller identification service available over messaging apps such as WhatsApp to help users identify potential spam calls over the internet. The beta phase feature will launch globally in May, according to Truecaller CEO Alan Mamedi. The move comes as telemarketing and scam calls are on the rise worldwide, particularly in India where users receive an average of 17 spam calls per month. In February, India’s telecom regulator instructed carriers such as Jio and Airtel to begin blocking spam calls over their networks using AI filters, an initiative which Truecaller is hoping to support.
The company is in discussion with Indian telecom operators regarding the implementation of a solution to tackle telemarketing and scam calls made over messaging apps. According to CEO Alan Mamedi, Truecaller has recently seen an increase in spam call reports over WhatsApp in India, where the messaging app enjoys high popularity. India is the company’s biggest market with 250 million users, out of a global 350 million, and Truecaller’s revenue is generated via advertising, subscriptions, and verified listings from businesses.
