Access to Twitter Content Limited for Free and Verified Users, Account Required to Read

In a recent social media post, Elon Musk, Executive Chair of Twitter, revealed that the platform is implementing limitations on the number of tweets users can read per day. The purpose of this measure is to deter excessive data scraping and system manipulation.

Initially, verified accounts were restricted to reading 6,000 posts daily, while unverified accounts were limited to 600 posts. New unverified accounts faced a stricter limit of 300 posts per day. However, Musk later announced an expansion of these limits. Verified users can now read up to 10,000 posts per day, unverified users can access 1,000 posts, and new unverified users have a limit of 500 posts daily. Unfortunately, Musk did not provide further details regarding this temporary reading restriction.

This move comes after Twitter’s decision to require users to have an account in order to view tweets. Musk referred to this as a “temporary emergency measure” to address the aggressive scraping of Twitter data by numerous organizations. Their actions were severely impacting the user experience.

Musk has also expressed dissatisfaction with artificial intelligence firms like OpenAI, particularly their use of Twitter data to train their large language models.

On a separate note, Twitter experienced an outage on Saturday morning, affecting thousands of users. The peak of the outage, around 11:17am ET (8:47 pm IST), saw nearly 7,500 users reporting issues with accessing the app. This incident adds to the challenges Twitter has faced under Musk’s ownership, prompting efforts to regain advertisers and boost subscription revenue through features like verification check marks in the Twitter Blue program.
