In this episode of Castle Talk, Jason Henderson sits down with the brilliant Ted Geoghan, the mastermind behind the thought-provoking film Brooklyn 45. Geoghan takes viewers on a thrill ride with his unique real-time supernatural thriller set in a Brooklyn brownstone post-World War II. The film, which arrived on Shudder on June 8th, showcases a talented ensemble cast including Anne Ramsay, Ron E. Rains, Jeremy Holm, Larry Fasenden, Ezra Buzzington, Kristina Klebe, and Lucy Carapetyan.

During their conversation, Geoghan dives into the creative process behind Brooklyn 45, discussing how he designed the film to capture the essence of a play, drawing inspiration from Hitchcock’s Lifeboat and Rope. Geoghan’s goal was to create a sense of “staginess” that adds a unique touch to the film, meticulously orchestrating the actors’ movements like a dance to guide the shots. Additionally, Geoghan shares his passion for utilizing practical effects, incorporating haunted mansion-style glass plate effects and sleight of hand techniques to bring the supernatural elements to life without relying heavily on CGI.

Beyond its thrilling scenes of gun violence, ghosts, and bloodshed, Brooklyn 45 delves deeper into the profound impact of war on individuals. Geoghan explains that the film serves as a meditation on war and its effects on various characters, including a female interrogator, a colonel with a fear of blood, and a gay man accused of war crimes.
