On Monday, Georgia Power made an exciting announcement that a third nuclear reactor at its Plant Vogtle has now started operating and is providing power to customers in the state. Plant Vogtle already has two reactors installed in the 1980s, and a fourth reactor is set to begin operations in 2024. Remarkably, this is the first nuclear reactor to come online in the United States since 2016.

The United States leads the world in nuclear power capacity, accounting for about 20% of its power generation, according to the Energy Information Administration. While wind and solar power are growing, nuclear power offers additional benefits for addressing climate change, as it produces zero carbon emissions and its generation is not affected by natural conditions.

Georgia Power CEO Kim Greene emphasized the importance of long-term investments that provide clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to their 2.7 million customers. She stated, “It is important that we make these kinds of long-term investments and see them through so we can continue providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to our 2.7 million customers.”
