A Live-Action Disney Remake Rumored to be Heading for Cancellation

Disney should reconsider their strategy of remaking every animated classic into live-action films. Although these remakes have consistently generated huge profits, the recent trend has shown a decline in both critical acclaim and commercial success.

For instance, “Mulan” performed poorly at the box office, “Peter Pan & Wendy” received negative reviews, “Pinocchio” was widely panned, and “The Little Mermaid” faced backlash. Even though “The Little Mermaid” grossed over $560 million, it might not be profitable due to associated controversies, with Peter Dinklage being blamed for some of it.

Nevertheless, Disney has nine more remakes in the pipeline. However, it appears that “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” may not be one of them. Despite its announcement in January 2019, the development of this remake has been slow. Composer Alan Menken indicated in May that the project had stalled.

Now, according to sources at The Disinsider, CEO Bob Iger might permanently shelve “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” due to his personal dislike for the original film.

“Now that Bob Iger is back in the driver’s seat, it is highly unlikely that the project will move forward as Iger is not the biggest fan of ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and a remake isn’t their priority. Things may change, but this is the most recent information available.”

While these reports are mere speculation, it might be wise for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” to retreat back into the shadows after four and a half years of inactivity.
