A $4M Indie Horror First Day at the Box Office Has Already Taken the Air Out of Disney’s Gimmicky Multi-Million Reboot

Disney may want to consider enlisting Loki‘s Miss Minutes to assist with their release calendar, as they recently released their lackluster yet high-budget reboot of Haunted Mansion. However, amidst the domination of Barbie and Oppenheimer at the box office, Disney doesn’t seem too concerned about losing to the heavy hitters. Surprisingly, their insignificant reboot of the critically panned 2003 film is being overshadowed by a low-budget indie horror gem, crafted by first-time directors who transitioned from YouTubers.

On July 28, Haunted Mansion opened with a tepid $9.9 million at the box office and is projected to finish the weekend with a worrisome estimate of $25 million, considering its whopping $157 million budget. The overwhelmingly negative reviews only affirm that this unnecessary reboot of an already unpopular film would have underperformed even without the competition from Barbenheimer.

Unfortunately, the chances of Haunted Mansion attracting horror enthusiasts took a nosedive with the release of A24’s Australian horror film, Talk to Me. On its release day (July 28), Talk to Me managed to recoup its production budget, raking in $4.5 million. Furthermore, it is expected to earn an additional $10 million during the weekend.

With its compelling performances and captivating storyline, Talk to Me, directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, is poised to become a box office smash. If it surpasses its projected weekend earnings, it will come as no surprise, considering its impressive 95% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 182 critic reviews.

Apparently, a skin-crawling tale of a malevolent embalmed hand unleashing evil forces triumphs over Disney’s attempt to revive an adaptation that fell short of impressing audiences twenty years ago, even with Eddie Murphy leading the way.
