YouTube Music’s new ‘Samples’ tab is made to help you discover new music

YouTube Music is experimenting with a novel approach to assist users in discovering new music. Introducing Samples, a dedicated tab within the YouTube Music app that offers a seamless feed of short video segments comprised solely of snippets from music videos. Essentially, Samples is like TikTok, but exclusively focused on showcasing these bite-sized music moments. Given the current landscape of music discovery in 2023, this concept holds significant potential.

The Samples feed is tailored to individual users, providing a diverse range of music options when accessed. If a user comes across something they enjoy, they can tap to play the complete song, watch the full video, add it to a playlist, or even create a short video with the song as the soundtrack. YouTube’s advantage lies in the fact that it is the only platform that enables all of these actions within a single app, in addition to offering features such as podcast streaming. YouTube is truly aiming to be the ultimate destination for all things audio.

The success of YouTube Music and its competitors heavily relies on their discovery mechanisms. Mere statements like “You can listen to Taylor Swift here” no longer hold much relevance. Instead, these companies strive to position themselves as the go-to platforms for music discovery, sharing, and interaction. Undoubtedly, TikTok is currently the dominant player in this arena. It has become so deeply intertwined with music discovery that Spotify’s “Top Hits” and “TikTok Songs” playlists often display remarkable similarities.

Since songs on TikTok frequently become viral through dances, skits, or reaction videos, the catchy portions of tracks that go viral are typically short excerpts. TikTok is now venturing into the realm of a comprehensive music app called TikTok Music, seeking to encompass the entire music-listening experience. YouTube, on the other hand, is approaching it from the opposite direction. Samples appears to be designed with the aim of providing users with the best moments of every song ever recorded, enticing them to explore the complete tracks.

Spotify also recently underwent a redesign that shared some similarities and design principles with Samples. However, Spotify faced rapid backlash for its redesign. Nonetheless, the company persists in exploring ways to incorporate TikTok’s mechanisms to facilitate the discovery of new music. Samples, being merely a tab within the YouTube Music app, is likely to face less controversy. Nevertheless, it exemplifies the extraordinary power of the fast-paced vertical scroll in helping users uncover new and exciting content.
