Verizon customers are getting better 5G coverage and speeds; the carrier explains why

The objective was to provide the largest wireless carrier in the country with ample mid-band spectrum. The characteristics of airwaves in this range allow signals to travel further than mmWave while delivering faster download speeds than low-band. This is why mid-band is referred to as the Goldilocks of wireless connectivity.

The carrier has gained access to the remaining C-band spectrum ahead of schedule, which is a significant achievement, according to Joe Russo, Executive VP & President of Global Networks and Technology at Verizon. “Being granted early access to the rest of the C-band spectrum puts us four months ahead of our original projections,” Russo stated.

Furthermore, he added, “The additional spectrum will expand the availability of 5G Ultra Wideband to even more Americans and enhance the accessibility of our home and business broadband solutions. Deploying more spectrum on our network increases our capacity for customers to connect.”

In the 2021 auction, Verizon successfully acquired C-Band licenses, consisting of 140Mhz-200Mhz of airwaves across all markets. Last year, it began utilizing 60MHz in 46 markets. As satellite companies clear more spectrum, Verizon has been able to offer 5G Ultra Wideband service in numerous additional markets, deploying an average of 161MHz of spectrum nationwide. Some markets can already provide a full 200MHz of bandwidth to Verizon customers.

In markets where bandwidth is not yet at 200MHz, Verizon has been implementing equipment upgrades through software updates to reach that level. Verizon states, “Customers will witness the effects of this significant increase in bandwidth within the coming days and weeks.” Additionally, Verizon has access to up to 200MHz of C-Band spectrum in 158 mostly rural markets, covering nearly 40 million individuals.

Since the implementation of C-Band spectrum, Verizon has extended the fast mid-band 5G experience to over 222 million people. Many Verizon customers are already enjoying download speeds of around 1Gbps.
