“I remember I dyed my hair too dark, and we had to go along with it. It just kept getting darker and darker, and it was like, ‘Goddamn it. Alright.’ Black,” Stone said with a laughter. Lanthimos provided further insight into the decision-making process.
“Our initial idea was for Bella to appear ahead of her time, a reactionary of sorts. We wanted her to have a childlike and natural quality, which is why we decided to dye her hair dark. However, Emma took it a step further and went full jet black. And I thought, ‘Alright.’ It looked absolutely stunning against her fair skin. Throughout the production, we encountered these unexpected accidents, from the intricate costume designs breaking apart to us having to build something new. It’s a very intricate process.”
Poor Things was directed by Lanthimos, based on a screenplay by Tony McNamara.
