The original Clock Tower game is finally coming to the West after 28 years.

WayForward Announces “Port+” of the Horror Classic Clock Tower

In a world where beloved SNES games like Trails of Mana are receiving official English translations, the number of unlocalized gems is steadily decreasing. As a fan of SNES games who grew up relying on fan translations, I wholeheartedly embrace this trend. That’s why I couldn’t contain my excitement when I discovered that WayForward is bringing Human Entertainment’s horror classic, Clock Tower, to the West for the first time. And not only that, they’re enhancing it with a range of exciting new features.

During the Limited Run Games 2023 showcase, WayForward announced a “Port+” of Clock Tower. It appears to be a faithful recreation of the original SNES game, but with an updated localization and bonus content. The new edition of Clock Tower will include an animated opening, “motion-comic cutscenes,” a captivating vocal theme by Mary McGlynn (known for her work on the Silent Hill series), and quality-of-life improvements like save states. It shares a similar concept to last year’s River City Girls Zero.

While some might be disappointed that Clock Tower won’t receive a full remaster, the original visual style still holds up remarkably well. There’s an inexplicable allure to retro horror games, reminiscent of Capcom’s hauntingly captivating Japan-only classic, Sweet Home.

Partnering with Limited Run Games

WayForward’s Clock Tower will leverage the Carbon Engine from Limited Run Games, a specialist in porting vintage titles to modern hardware. As expected, Clock Tower will also receive a physical release through Limited Run Games on select platforms. Further details about the release will be announced at a later date.

I’m extremely curious to see how Clock Tower will resonate with a new, contemporary audience. Personally, I never managed to progress far in the original game during my teenage years. The overwhelming sense that every wrong decision would lead to the demise of the characters at the hands of the Scissorman proved too much for me. Additionally, I wonder if the original point-and-click interface will receive any modernization, considering that fans have already undertaken such efforts for the SNES version.

If you’re ready to experience some retro horror, Clock Tower will be available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC in early 2024.
