The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Hera mission, designed for planetary defense, is set to conduct a detailed survey of the Dimorphos asteroid in deep space. However, before Hera can reach its destination, it has to traverse millions of kilometers. This challenging task falls upon Hera’s Propulsion Module, which comprises half of the spacecraft and has been developed by Italy’s Avio company.

The Propulsion Module, consisting of a central tube and a supporting structure, has been equipped with propellant tanks, piping, and thrusters (enclosed in red protective covers). Prior to joining the Core Module, the Propulsion Module underwent a crucial “global leak test,” as captured in the accompanying video.

In order to validate its readiness, the Module was filled with gaseous nitrogen and then placed within its container. Internal sensors were used to detect any pressure changes over the course of the night. A successful outcome means Hera can proceed to OHB in Germany to be integrated with the Core Module, marking the completion of the Hera spacecraft and bringing the mission one step closer to space. The next milestone for Hera is the Environmental Test campaign at ESTEC, where it will be subjected to the harsh launch and space environment to ensure its survival.
