Pom Klementieff Discusses Her Riveting Fight Scene With Tom Cruise in Impossible 7

Pom Klementieff, known for her role as Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has left that behind and is now ready to make a splash in another blockbuster film, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One. In this film, she takes on the role of a villain alongside Esai Morales’s main baddie Gabriel. Klementieff brings a chaotic energy to the film as she battles Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell. Collider’s Steve Weintraub had the opportunity to speak with Klementieff about her experience working on the film and how her alleyway fight scene with Cruise came together.

When Klementieff was last in Rome, she was involved in an intense car chase scene, pursuing Cruise and Atwell. She describes the experience as “insane” and recalls driving a Humvee around a fountain in Rome while chasing them. Despite the heart-stopping moments, she was warmly welcomed back for the premiere. “It’s movie magic!” she exclaims.

The alleyway fight scene presented numerous challenges due to the narrow space. Klementieff explains that setting up the cameras and lighting was particularly technical to capture the action effectively. Kicks and punches had to be carefully choreographed within the limited area. She and Cruise took their time to make the scene perfect, ensuring it would work for their characters and the overall action of the film. Klementieff spent months training with stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood to perfect her character’s unique fighting style.

“I trained for months! For months and months, and I’d been training even before. I was training with Wade Eastwood who’s the stunt coordinator, who worked in the previous movies, and who’s amazing to work with. We were trying to find the fight style of the character to make it unique as well.”

In terms of filming the alleyway fight scene, Klementieff praises Cruise for being a “gentleman.” While filming, they had to be cautious about the level of contact in their punches to avoid causing harm. Klementieff emphasizes that she knows where to stop and not hurt someone due to her extensive training. She even requested a bit of contact from Cruise to enhance the scene, but he declined because of his gentlemanly nature.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One features an ensemble cast, including Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Ving Rhames, and Hayley Atwell. The film centers around a new weapon that could pose a threat to humanity, prompting a global race to retrieve it. Meanwhile, Ethan Hunt’s past comes back to haunt him as a powerful enemy emerges.

Watch out for the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in theaters on July 12. Don’t miss our interview with Tom Cruise below!
