MachineGames’ Original Plan for Indiana Jones Game Included PS5 Release

MachineGames’ highly anticipated Indiana Jones game was initially intended for a release on multiple platforms. However, following Xbox’s acquisition of ZeniMax, the plans were altered. This revelation came to light during the trial between Xbox/Activision and the Federal Trade Commission, as Bethesda’s Pete Hines disclosed that Disney had an agreement with ZeniMax for a multiplatform AAA Indiana Jones game. However, after Bethesda was acquired by Xbox, the agreement with Disney was revised, making the Indiana Jones game an exclusive for Xbox and PC. Hines also mentioned that the game is scheduled to be available on Game Pass from its launch day. The trial showcased various emails and conversations that shed light on the decision to make Indiana Jones a platform exclusive.

One email exchange between Hines, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, Xbox Studios head Matt Booty, and other executives emphasized LucasFilm’s concern about platforms due to the existing agreement to develop the game for multiple consoles. Xbox recognized the significance of having an exciting game from Bethesda, but expressed the downside of a significant portion of Bethesda’s output not directly benefiting the Xbox community. This internal discussion highlighted the importance of the Indiana Jones game.

MachineGames, known for their work on Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, is the studio behind the upcoming Indiana Jones game. As an integral part of the Bethesda/ZeniMax family, MachineGames became part of Xbox’s acquisition. Official platform announcements for the game have not been made yet, but Hines’ recent remarks provide the strongest indication of where players can expect to access Indiana Jones.

Although the Indiana Jones game was announced in 2021, it has been absent from Xbox’s showcases for over two years. Todd Howard, a prominent figure at Bethesda, will serve as the executive producer for the project. In a past interview, Howard mentioned that the game would be a unique blend of different genres, piquing curiosity among fans.

This isn’t the first instance where a ZeniMax studio game became an Xbox exclusive after the acquisition. Arkane’s co-op vampire shooter, Redfall, also underwent a similar transition, resulting in the cancellation of the PlayStation 5 version.

The Microsoft FTC trial, with its potential implications for the proposed $68.7 billion acquisition, has been closely monitored. Noteworthy moments from the trial include PlayStation’s Jim Ryan expressing no concern about Call of Duty becoming exclusive to Xbox and Xbox acknowledging its loss in the console wars. Additionally, the possibility of a PlayStation version of The Outer Worlds 2 remains undecided.
