EA Games undergoes rebranding, separating from EA Sports

Electronic Arts is undergoing an internal shakeup that will result in the separation of EA Sports and EA Games. This restructuring is part of the company’s broader plan, which includes rebranding EA Games as EA Entertainment. This move suggests that the company is looking to expand beyond its traditional focus on video games.

According to CEO Andrew Wilson, this restructuring is aimed at empowering the creative teams and capitalizing on the massive growth opportunities in the interactive entertainment industry. Laura Miele, EA’s former Chief Operating Officer, will now serve as the President of Entertainment, Technology, and Central Development at EA Entertainment. In this role, she will work closely with Vince Zampella, the head of Respawn Entertainment, and other key executives.

Cam Weber will continue to lead EA Sports, leveraging his extensive involvement in the development of EA’s NFL series. The split is intended to give Weber and Miele greater oversight over their respective labels, allowing them to have more control over budgets and decision-making processes.

The restructuring will also see Stuart Canfield taking over as the Chief Financial Officer, replacing Chris Su. Additionally, David Tinson will assume the position of Chief Experiences Officer, replacing Chris Bruzzo, who is retiring.

It is worth noting that EA’s restructuring coincides with the news that Bioware’s popular MMO, “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” will be transitioned to a third-party development model. This transition will involve many developers moving to different areas within the company. However, it remains uncertain whether this restructuring will lead to layoffs at EA.

Under the new structure, EA Sports will oversee the F1 series, PGA Tour, EA Sports FC, NHL, College Football reboot, and the new Super Mega Baseball. On the other hand, EA Entertainment will include Respawn, DICE, Ripple Effect, Ridgeline Games, Full Circle, Motive Studios, EA’s Seattle studio, BioWare, and the EA Originals label. It will also continue to manage its mobile games.

In unrelated news, Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, has announced the establishment of his new studio, Absurd Ventures.

Overall, this restructuring marks an important step for Electronic Arts as it positions itself for further growth and diversification in the interactive entertainment industry.
