A recent Nintendo Direct presentation unveiled an exciting piece of news for Switch players. A sequel to Detective Pikachu called Detective Pikachu Returns is set to release this October.

Unlike the typical adaptation, this version of Pikachu breaks the mold. It features a more talkative, human-like Pikachu voiced by Kaiji Tang. However, fans are curious to know who will be voicing the yellow detective in the upcoming sequel.

According to the Economic Times, the voice of Detective Pikachu in the new game will be none other than Will Arnett, known for his distinct baritone in series like Arrested Development and films like The LEGO Batman Movie.

Arnett’s voice perfectly matches the character: occasionally abrasive yet capable of expressing deep melancholy, as seen in his iconic roles. It’s worth noting that this is a departure from the cute and cuddly Pikachu seen in most games and animated series.

In the film adaptation, Pikachu was voiced by Ryan Reynolds, and audiences embraced this unconventional take. Speaking of the film adaptations:

It has been a while since any updates were provided about Detective Pikachu 2. The sequel was greenlit back in 2019, five months prior to the release of the first film, which received surprisingly positive reviews and grossed $433 million at the box office.

Earlier this year, Polygon reported that Legendary Entertainment confirmed active development of the film. Months later, Deadline discovered that Legendary was in talks with Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia and the FX series Baskets, to direct the sequel. The report also mentioned that Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer) would be writing the screenplay, assembling a new creative team for the potential franchise.

While fans eagerly await an announcement regarding the voice of Detective Pikachu in the film sequel, considering the significant changes happening behind the scenes, it remains uncertain if Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role. The answer may lie in information from the previous film.

How did the first Detective Pikachu film end?

For those who may have forgotten or skipped the first Detective Pikachu movie, the final act delivered some surprising twists. Firstly, Rhyme City founder Howard Clifford is revealed to be a villainous character who desires the fusion of humans and Pokémon, potentially driven by his wheelchair-bound state and a longing for the freedom and power that Pokémon bodies provide.

It is later revealed that Pikachu sounds like Ryan Reynolds because Reynolds’ character, the estranged father of protagonist Tim Goodman, is trapped inside Pikachu’s adorable exterior.

The film concludes with Reynolds back in his own body, separate from Pikachu’s.
