Get a sneak peek of the spatial computing future with the Apple Vision Pro initial review.

Apple has not yet allowed customers to try out its Vision Pro mixed reality headset, but I managed to catch a glimpse of the hardware during the crowded WWDC event. It appears to be another headset, like an advanced version of the Meta Quest Pro. However, even a brief glance makes it clear that the Vision Pro is unmistakably Apple; it’s like comparing the iPod to the bulky MP3 players of its time, or the iPhone to a BlackBerry.

The Vision Pro is Apple’s daring step into the universe of spatial computing, and it appears that the company has gained extensive knowledge from VR and AR headsets that came before it. The front of the device boasts an OLED screen that can display your eyes, making you feel more connected with the people around you. Its elastic side bands and ribbed rear headband seem suitably high-end, and it has the wow factor you’d expect from a premium Apple product.

However, there are some concerns. The required battery pack is not very Seemingly Apple, as you’ll have to carry it in your pocket or find another place to store it. And we have yet to see anyone wearing this headset in real life. The Apple event staff warned that we couldn’t touch or even get too close to the Vision Pro. And, of course, we won’t know if Apple’s spatial computing vision lives up to its slick promotional videos until we can actually wear the device.

At the very least, though, the Vision Pro gives me hope for the future of spatial computing. Recent headsets, such as the Sony PlayStation VR2 and the Meta Quest Pro, have clearly demonstrated the limitations of virtual reality. They are too far removed from the real world and focused mainly on games. The Vision Pro, on the other hand, provides a glimpse into a world beyond screens.
