How to Enable 960FPS Slo-mo; Macro Mode in OnePlus 7 Pro [Root]

OnePlus’ OxygenOS is one of the best forks of Android you can get on a premium range of smartphones. It is packed with useful features that make up for the best Android user experience. Also, the similarities with stock Android and OnePlus’ regular security updates are well-praised among the tech community.
OnePlus quite recently rolled out the OxygenOS Open Beta 3 update for the OnePlus 7T, which has a hidden toggle for the 960FPS slo-mo video recording. Although it uses software-based motion interpolation to simulate a 960FPS video, it is a pleasant surprise for OnePlus 7T users considering that the OnePlus 8 series can record slow-mo videos in ‘true’ 480FPS.
An XDA Senior Member named elmarian756 has discovered that the 960FPS slow-mo mode can also be enabled on the OnePlus 7 Pro, as OxygenOS’ camera stack does the video processing.
Since it doesn’t use any additional hardware or sensor, the OnePlus 7 Pro with its powerful chipset and camera hardware can also do the slo-mo video processing on the go. It requires users to change some parameters in the OnePlus camera app.
Similarly, according to XDA Senior Member gohan040, it’s possible to enable macro mode on OnePlus 7 Pro, which utilizes the ultrawide-angle sensor from the camera array. However, the quality of the photos taken in macro mode isn’t as good as the 7T Pro, since the 7 Pro doesn’t have a dedicated macro motor.
These OxygenOS features are still in the early development phase. But, if you are looking forward to trying out the new camera modes on your OnePlus 7 Pro, then continue reading this guide to enable them.

Requirements

Before you start following this guide, here are some things you need to do on your OnePlus 7 Pro:

  • For full compatibility, upgrade to the latest beta build of OxygenOS. This link will redirect you to the build pages of the OP7 Pro. Download the latest .zip file from the Beta Build section, then scroll down the webpage to follow the instructions for upgrading to the beta OxygenOS build.

Warning: Flashing your device will completely wipe your personal data. Please back up your important files before flashing the beta build.

  • Install the newest version of the OnePlus Camera from the beta branch (v3.10.17 or later). Note that it is already included with the Open Beta build, but checking for updates doesn’t hurt.
  • Rooting your device is a mandatory requirement. XDA has a detailed root guide for the OnePlus 7 Pro, which you can check out here.

Warning: For root access, you also have to unlock the bootloader of your OnePlus 7 Pro first. Although most OEMs don’t provide support for unlocked devices, OnePlus is a big exception.
Also, follow the root guide very carefully if you don’t want to end up with a bricked, unrecoverable device. We won’t be responsible for your mistakes, so proceed at your own discretion.

  • Download and install Preferences Manager from the Play Store. We will need it to change the camera stack parameters.

After a reboot, the macro mode should appear in the camera app.

Unless you aren’t daily driving your OnePlus 7 Pro, you can install the Open Beta build, root your device, and make system-level changes to enable the features.
