Since assuming the co-CEO position at DC Studios, James Gunn has faced relentless attempts from Zack Snyder’s supporters to pit them against each other, even when the connections and comparisons are tenuous at best.
Ironically, Gunn and Snyder appear to have a cordial relationship. It shouldn’t be ignored, regardless of how many people choose to ignore it, that Gunn wrote the screenplay for Snyder’s highest-rated film to date, which also happened to be Snyder’s directorial debut.
Now that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is available on digital and VOD, the criticism is resurfacing, particularly regarding the film’s standout action sequence, in which the team annihilates a group of enemies in a remarkable fashion.
As expected, the ongoing debate has latched onto a scene from Snyder’s Sucker Punch, a film that received harsh criticism and performed poorly at the box office.
What’s amusing is that Gunn already disclosed his true inspiration for the explosive scene, citing the significantly overlooked and outstanding South Korean action film, The Villainess, by Jung Byung-gil. It becomes evident when watching Star-Lord and the crew dominate their adversaries.
Of course, the manufactured battle between Gunn and Snyder perpetuated by a certain segment of the internet will never cease, so there’s no point in hoping for its conclusion anytime soon.
