While most of these evildoers accomplished the task of being an obstacle for the protagonist to surpass, some have been more effective as antagonists than others. Below, we will discuss some of the best and most compelling evil duelists in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Spoiler Warning: Beware of major plot spoilers from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

10
Yuri

Despite the many critics of Yu-Gi-Oh! Some of arc-V’s lackluster villains still stood out for their malice and cruelty, with Yuri on top of them. This sadistic and unhinged young man was raised to be the Academy’s best weapon.

In the past, he was a part of the villainous Z-Arc, the egocentric and selfish duelist who separated the known universe into four different dimensions. It seems as if Yuri inherited all the worst traits from his former life, as he enjoyed torturing his opponents with his Predaplant deck. Sadly, he was severely underutilized in the show, which greatly disappointed his fans.

AI

AI from Yugioh VRAINS talking with Yusaku

It is not often that a main hero in Yu-Gi-Oh! becomes a major villain. AI, Yusaku’s partner for most of Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS is one of the few cases where this phenomenon takes place. After receiving a vision of himself causing the end of humanity by saving Yusaku, AI decided to take matters into his own hands.

He adopted a vicious and mocking persona, challenging all the best duelists in hopes of finding one that would put an end to his life. Only his former partner could defeat him, but not before learning the truth about AI’s tragic destiny. Unfortunately, the show rushed this final duel quite a bit, taking away from the importance of AI’s sacrifice.

Sartorius

Sartorius from Yugioh GX during his duel with Jaden

The Light of Destruction was a cosmic force with the only purpose of annihilating all life in the universe. The only person who could defeat it is the Supreme King, who was reincarnated in Jaden Yuki’s body. To face its mortal enemy, this cosmic destructive force possessed Sartorius, a powerful clairvoyant.

This affable and manipulative man used his powers over destiny to create an entire Society of Light, brainwashing many of Jaden’s friends into becoming his enemies. He also used his abilities to facilitate the activation of his Arcana deck, which was based on luck. Tragically, Sartorius’s final duel was interrupted many times, frustrating many fans and robbing this villain of his popularity.

7
Rex Goodwin

Rex Goodwin from Yugioh 5Ds before turning into a Dark Signer

The world of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds had been caught in a never-ending war between the Signers and the Dark Signers. These two groups of powerful warriors were destined to either save or destroy the universe. To put an end to this conflict, the head of Neo-Domino City’s security, Rex Goodwin, tried to become a member of these two teams.

However, his mind was not powerful enough to resist the temptation of the dark mark put on him as a Dark Signer. This turned the already cruel and manipulative man into a tyrant who wished to see the world rebuilt in his image with the help of his Inca deck. Lamentably, some fans believe that the show did not take advantage of Goodwin’s full potential as a villain, as he was beaten fairly quickly.

Yubel

Yubel fom Yugioh Gx during their duel with Jaden

When Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx’s Duel Academy was transported to the Duel Monsters Dimension, Jaden and his friends wondered for a long time who brought them there. It was later revealed that the individual responsible was none other than Yubel, Jaden’s favorite childhood card and partner.

This powerful and serious monster had to be sent away to space due to its erratic and overprotective behavior towards Jaden. As Yubel traveled through space, they were infected by the Light of Destruction, turning them into terrifying and malevolent beings. While Yubel is very beloved by fans, the conclusion to their story arc left a lot to be desired.

5
Z-one

Z-one from Yugioh 5Ds after his mask is destroyed

200 years after the events of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, the world was destroyed by a race of super-advanced robots known as the Meklord Emperors. Z-one, the last remaining human on Earth, tried to avoid this destiny but failed at every turn. His tragic past, as well as the solitude of his era, caused his mind to snap.

He began to call himself God of Destiny, believing it was his mission to prevent the end of humanity. To accomplish this task, he created androids based on his former associates, each with a mission to prevent the apocalypse, even if it meant killing innocents in the process. Z-one is a relatable and empathetic villain, but his god complex makes it difficult for fans to truly enjoy his character.

4
Vector

Vector from Yugioh Zexal laughing

When the Number Cards arrived on Earth, many individuals began a quest to acquire them and use their powers for their own goals. However, Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal gave fans one of the biggest and most shocking twists when it was revealed that the Barian Emperor Vector was the one who manipulated all these characters into doing his bidding.

Once a rightful and kind ruler, Vector was corrupted by the God Don-Thousand into becoming a cruel and ruthless duelist. Vector wished to destroy both the Astral and Human worlds, as doing this would allow Don-Thousand and himself to rule over everything. This cunning and devious antagonist is beloved by fans, but his dueling abilities are not on par with many other villains in the franchise.

3
Marik Ishtar

Yami Marik from Yugioh during his duel against Atem

For generations, the Ishtar family acted as the guardians of the Pharaoh Atem’s grave. Marik, the youngest member of the main branch of the family, was raised to be the leader of his family by his savage and uncaring father. The constant abuse he was subjected to, as well as the darkness contained in the Millennium Rod, caused Marik’s mind to split in two.

Though both Mariks wished for the death of the pharaoh, only the darker and more unhinged side managed to become a tangible threat. With the aid of the Winged Dragon of Ra, this evil Marik managed to terrorize most duelists during the Battle City arc of the show. Woefully, Marik’s time as a villain was short, and he disappeared from the show for many months after he was defeated.

2
Maximillion Pegasus

Pegasus from Yugioh during a duel with Kaiba

Even those who have never seen the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime has heard of the iconic and beloved villain Maximillion Pegasus. As a young man, Pegasus had to watch his wife die due to an incurable disease. He began traveling the world, looking for a way to bring her back to life. His search led him to Egypt, where he found out the truth about the Millennium Item’s magic.

Due to his status as the creator of Duel Monsters, Pegasus had the power to start a tournament that would allow him to gain the seven items. With the help of his Toon deck, Pegasus forced Yugi to duel against him to save his grandfather’s soul. Still, after he was defeated, Pegasus was relegated to be an occasional ally to Yugi and his friends, leaving behind his villainous persona.

1
Bakura

Yami Bakura from Yugioh during a duel against Atem

Despite being created with noble intent, the Millennium Items required a vast amount of human sacrifices to obtain their magical abilities. All these sacrifices came from a specific village, with only a small boy surviving the massacre, the future King of Thieves Bakura. This deranged young man swore vengeance upon the pharaohs of Egypt, going as far as to work with the demon Zorc.

When he passed, his soul and Zorc’s were sealed inside the Millennium Ring, forcing them to fuse. Ryo, one of Yugi’s classmates, found the ring and became possessed, transforming into the most prevalent villain in the franchise. Bakura tormented the pharaoh with his Fiend deck until the final moments of the show, proving himself to be the best and most iconic villain in the franchise.
