Xiaomi has reportedly filed two new patents for the new vastly different foldable smartphone concepts in China. These two patents feature designs that are familiar with what we’ve seen from other companies before. However, these patents are different in their own way. Out of these two patents, one of the devices folds horizontally making a wider display, while the second folds vertically for a longer display.
If we consider the first device, the design of the first patent reminds us of the Huawei Mate X. The display folds over to the back, making the device feel like a normal-sized smartphone. On folding it out, it looks like a standard size tablet.
However, when we consider the second patent, it is completely different from what we have seen in the first design. Instead of forming a wider display, this device features a much longer display in a clamshell form. The main thing, however, is that the display is always on the outside of the device, which means that folding the phone is only for making the device shorter. The camera module is also seen to be fitted on the display itself.
The second patent seems to be inspired by the Motorola Razr, the fact that the display is always on the outside of the device which is quite weird to see. While it’s fully possible neither one of these devices will ever fully materialize, it’s certainly interesting to discuss and imagine what they’d be like if they were real. However, we will advise you to take this leak as a grain of salt.
