After Motorola, more smartphone brands will reportedly use Samsung’s Exynos chipset to power upcoming Android phones. Samsung has been powering most of its phones that are sold in India with Exynos chipset apart from a few mid-range devices that offer Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. As per a report by Business Korea, Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Business Division is planning to supply Exynos chips to smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo in 2021.
While there is no official confirmation yet, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo may most likely use Exynos chipsets for budget Android phones. The first set of phones with Exynos processors from Xiaomi, Oppo and others may be launched by mid-2021. For those unaware,Vivo has already launched a smartphone with Exynos chipset in China. The Vivo Y70s is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 880 chip which supports 5G connectivity too.
The report claimed that Samsung’s System LSI Business Division “has started to reduce supply of the Exynos APs to the Wireless Business Division because of a low profit margin and sought to secure new customers, focusing on Chinese makers.”
Having said that it would be highly unlikely that Xiaomi and other Chinese brands would completely shift to Exynos chips. For flagship devices in the mid-range price segment these brands may continue with Qualcomm.
Meanwhile, Samsung will unveil its Exynos 1080 SoC on November 12. The company confirmed the launch of the new processor via a post on Chinese microblogging site Weibo. The chipset is said to power mid-range Samsung smartphones. It will succeed the Exynos 980 SoC processor which currently powers Samsung Galaxy A series phones like Galaxy A71, Galaxy A51 and more.
Samsung has already confirmed that the upcoming chipset will be equipped with the latest Cortex-A78 CPU cores and Mali-G78 GPU.
