Recent issues of Hellions have highlighted a particularly wild mutant who has changed his focus from searching for an alpha to hunting down a mate.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hellions #9 by Zeb Wells, Stephen Segovia, David Curiel, & VC’s Ariana Maher, on sale now.
The Hellions of Krakoa are a team of misfits who find it hard to fit into civilized mutant society. One of the members, Wild Child, has been searching for his place for a long time. Since his death in Amenth and subsequent resurrection, Wild Child has become more focused on one thing in particular — finding a mate.
Since Wild Child’s first appearance in 1983’s Alpha Flight #1 — by John Byrne, Joe Rosen, and Andy Yanchus — has been a bit of an outcast. Kyle Gibney, Wild Child’s real name, is a “feral” mutant. Having claws on his hands and feet, pointed ears, and a slightly animal-like face he has stuck out around both humans and mutants. This, in addition to him needing a strong “alpha” presence in his life, have caused him to shift between hero and villain several times over.

When he first encountered Aurora of Alpha Flight, she commented several times during their fight about his hideous appearance. Later, when he joined the Alpha Flight team, he took medication that contained his feral physical attributes but kept his fighting and tracking abilities. Now that he was much more attractive, he pursued a romantic relationship with Aurora. To show how much he had changed from his Wild Child days, he changed his code name to Wild Heart. Unfortunately, his happiness was not meant to last. He soon reverted to his more animal-like appearance, and not wanting to face Aurora, left her and the team behind.
This time his face became worse than ever, making him more like Nosferatu than himself, especially since the loss of his signature long blonde hair. Yet his love for Aurora endured. Her mental state had much deteriorated and she was being kept in a mental facility. The Weapon X program convinced Wild Child they could help her, if they both joined the organization. Wild Child saved her but was rejected by Aurora because of his new appearance. She cruelly told him that she could not keep her food down if he was in the room. Even after this rejection she still meant the world to him. Sabertooth used Wild Child’s love for Aurora to cause deep emotional harm to the feral mutant, torturing her in front of him until he cried and begged for his love’s life. Though the two never reconciled, this relationship defined Wild Child up until his death at the hands of Omega Red.
With Krakoa’s resurrection protocols Wild Child was one of the many brought back to life after the island was settled. This time around he maintained his feral abilities and sensibilities but looked a bit more human than before. After attacking an animal in front of some younger mutants, Wild Child was supposed to be back on the medication that had turned him more civilized before. Only pretending to take the medication, he attacked his captors and escaped the holding cell which brought him to the Hellions team since the Quiet Council did not know what else to do with him. Even on the team of violent mutants, he tried attacking them and was out of control until Psylocke fought him and proved to be his better. He accepted her as his alpha and followed her obediently.
Once again, Wild Child’s feeling of contentment would be disrupted. When the Hellions ventured to Amenth, Wild Child sacrificed himself to allow Psylocke to escape. After being brought back to life on Krakoa, he became the peak version of himself. Retaining a mainly human face, his feral psyche was still present and made him much more direct and self-assured. He told Greycrow that he wanted to find a she-wolf and grow his pack. Later he admitted that he had not found a mate yet, because the women of Krakoa perceive him as weak. Greycrow pointed out that maybe his aggressiveness was pushing women away.
Wild Child has not expressed a particular interest in anyone as of yet. His former love, Aurora, however, is now dating Daken and is no longer an option. Most recently his greatest attachment has been to Psylocke yet that never seemed to hold anything romantic. Wild Child is better looking than he was previously when he went feral but his shortened sentences and mood swings may be hindering his search for love. If the right woman gave him a chance though, his entire demeanor could change, similar to how it did previously with Psylocke’s help.
