Last week, we reported that the Wonder Woman game might feature live service elements following a job ad spotted on the official Warner Bros. website. The listing was noticed just as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav told investors the gaming division would focus on transforming its biggest franchises into live service titles so that players would spend more time (and money) on them, driving monetization and engagement at higher levels for longer time.
However, a Warner Bros. spokesperson reached out to IGN to deny that the Wonder Woman game was being designed to be live service.
Wonder Woman is a single-player action-adventure game set in a dynamic open world. This third-person experience will allow players to become Diana of Themyscira and introduce an original story set in the DC Universe while also featuring the Nemesis System. Wonder Woman is not being designed as a live service.
The game was originally announced at The Game Awards 2021. In development at Monolith Productions, the studio behind 2014’s Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and 2017’s Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Wonder Woman will leverage the patented Nemesis System to allow players to ‘forge deep connections with both enemies and allies as they progress from a heroic fighter into a proven leader’. Very little is known about the plot other than Diana of Themyscira will have to unite her human friends and her Amazon family to fight a new, mysterious threat.
Considering it’s already been six years since Shadow of War, we might be approaching a proper reveal for the game, and the upcoming The Game Awards (airing on December 7) may be the perfect venue for that.
In other Warner Bros. DC news, Rocksteady has recently debuted the first episode of an insider series on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This game will feature Wonder Woman, too, albeit as an allied non-player character. Unlike the game in development by Monolith Productions, this title will indeed feature live service elements such as a Battle Pass, at least four seasons, and free new playable villains, environments, weapons, and in-game events.
