Despite the ongoing WGA strike causing a pause in production, the highly anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us now has a confirmed theatrical release date. The book gained immense popularity after receiving attention from the TikTok community, which ultimately led to its film adaptation. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to experience the story on the big screen, as Columbia Pictures has scheduled the film for an early release next year.
An official synopsis for the adaptation has also been released, staying true to the beloved source material. The story delves into themes of romance, domestic abuse, and self-discovery, drawing from the author’s personal experiences during her childhood. The narrative revolves around Lily Bloom, a red-headed florist who meets Ryle Kincaid, a charming and successful neurosurgeon. They develop a deep connection and embark on a passionate relationship. However, Lily’s haunting experiences with an abusive father shape her perspective on love and relationships. As the story unfolds, Lily finds herself torn between her feelings for Ryle and the memories of her past, especially when her former flame, Atlas Corrigan, reenters her life.
The Cast of ‘It Ends With Us’
Earlier this year, Colleen Hoover took to Instagram to reveal the main cast for the adaptation. Blake Lively, known for her role in “Gossip Girl,” was chosen to portray Lily, which Hoover described as her “dream Lily.” Justin Baldoni, known for “Jane The Virgin,” was cast opposite Lively as Ryle. Baldoni also took on the role of director. The cast also includes Jenny Slate from “SNL” as Ryle’s sister, Alyssa, Hasan Minhaj from “Patriot Act” as Alyssa’s husband and Ryle’s best friend Marshall, and Brandon Sklenar from “1923” as Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan.
Differences Between the Book and Film Adaptation
Following fan observations that Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni appeared older than the characters Lily and Ryle, who are 23 and 30 years old respectively according to the book, author Colleen Hoover addressed the concerns. She explained that the decision to age up the characters was made to rectify an unintentional mistake in the novel. Hoover admitted that at the time of writing, she was unaware of the extensive duration required to become a neurosurgeon. The film adaptation presents an opportunity to correct this oversight by aligning the characters’ ages more accurately with Ryle’s profession. So far, this appears to be the only major change the movie will have compared to the book. The film will also include numerous flashbacks to Lily and Ryle’s past, just like in the book, although the actors portraying their younger versions have yet to be revealed.
It Ends With Us will be released in theaters on February 9, 2024. For more information, check out the official synopsis and our recent interview with Blake Lively.
