Why the Pixel Fold Should Embrace Samsung’s Foldable Display Feature

Introducing the Pixel Fold, an innovative foldable phone by Google that embodies the brand’s strengths in a unique and refreshing design. While it does have some minor issues like any other smartphone, there is one significant software feature missing from the Pixel Fold that has gone unnoticed. We strongly believe that Google should address this omission soon, especially considering that Samsung already offers it in their Z Fold lineup. So, what’s the missing feature? The ability to customize each screen independently.

Currently, the Pixel Fold does not allow users to visually customize the outer and inner displays separately. Any changes made to one home screen are automatically reflected on the other. In other words, the larger inside display’s home screen is simply a combination of the first and second outer home screens placed side by side. This lack of per-screen customization is also present in the vivo X Fold series, but it is more disappointing when it comes from Google, a platform holder that should be setting an example.

This one-size-fits-all approach poses a problem because different users have different use cases for each screen. Considering that you have two significantly different display sizes, it would be ideal to have media apps and large widgets on the inner folding display to take advantage of the increased screen real estate. On the other hand, you may prefer to have quick access to messaging apps, payment solutions, grocery lists, and smaller widgets on the smartphone display.

Apart from varying screen sizes, the ability to customize each screen independently would allow for more personalization options and make the device truly unique to each user. It’s not an unreasonable demand since Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series already offers per-screen customization, as clearly shown in the accompanying images. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 even provides the option to choose between independent screen customization or mirroring the displays.

Samsung even provides tips on its website for customizing each screen, highlighting different tasks and apps for each display. While Samsung isn’t perfect in their foldable software, they seem to be closer to the goal of per-display controls for brightness, refresh rate, and auto-rotate compared to Google. This indicates that there’s still plenty of room for improvement when it comes to the Pixel Fold’s software.

In conclusion, the Pixel Fold is a commendable entry into the foldable phone market, bringing Google’s exclusive Pixel features to this new form factor. However, it is evident that there is ample room for improvement, particularly in display customization. We hope that Google takes inspiration from Samsung and introduces per-display customization in the Pixel Fold soon. It would also be beneficial if they incorporate this feature into the Android Open Source Project, allowing all Android manufacturers to leverage this useful capability.
