Why Instagram’s Threads is Seen as a ‘Clear Victory’ for Mastodon, a Twitter Competitor

Instagram’s Threads app is now available on iPhone, Android smartphones, and the web. It serves as a separate platform from Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, although users can sign in using their Instagram accounts.

Described as a Twitter rival, Threads operates on a similar concept by allowing users to follow others, write threads (similar to tweets), reshare them (similar to retweets), and share content on other platforms. Notably, Threads supports the ActivityPub protocol, which makes it a part of the decentralized social web. Although the app initially launched without ActivityPub support, Instagram’s Head, Adam Mosseri, confirmed that it would be introduced in the future. Mastodon, another Twitter rival, also utilizes the ActivityPub protocol.

ActivityPub is a protocol for social media networks that promotes interoperability. It allows users to use social media just like they use email, enabling communication regardless of the specific service they use. The protocol’s goal is to empower users and create a decentralized social web. Instagram plans to integrate Threads into the fediverse, a social network of third-party operated servers that can communicate with each other.

Mastodon, which became popular after Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, has long advocated for platform interoperability. Eugene Rochko, CEO and founder of Mastodon, views large platforms like Threads adopting ActivityPub as a validation of the movement towards decentralized social media. He believes it provides an opportunity for users to switch to better providers, thereby encouraging platforms to offer more ethical services.

With ActivityPub support, Threads users can follow and be followed by individuals on different servers within the fediverse. Content and information may be shared across these servers. Users with private profiles have the ability to approve follow requests from both Threads and non-Threads users. On Threads, users from other servers will have their server names added to their displayed usernames. Changes made on one server do not necessarily impact other servers within the fediverse.

Overall, the integration of ActivityPub into Threads signifies a shift towards increased user control and the advancement of decentralized social media.
