Whether you liked it or not, Final Fantasy 16 seems to be a big hit with its series’ creator

Regardless of whether you were a fan or not, it appears that the creator of the series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, is quite pleased with Final Fantasy 16.

With Final Fantasy 16 taking a darker and more Game of Thrones-inspired approach to its world, there has been some debate about whether it truly qualifies as a “real Final Fantasy game” or not. However, who better to judge Final Fantasy than one of its original creators? Despite not working on the series for many years, Sakaguchi remains up to date with all the games, including the latest installment. In fact, he has even gone so far as to describe Final Fantasy 16 as the “ultimate fantasy.”

Sakaguchi shared a couple of screenshots from the game in a pair of tweets and wrote, “I think… Final Fantasy is something that continues to evolve. It is never completed. Adventurousness, courage, and determination are the key words.” While he doesn’t explicitly state it, it seems that Final Fantasy 16 encompasses all of these qualities.

Although the developer’s opinion on the game’s quality isn’t the final say, his input is valuable considering his significant role in Final Fantasy’s history. Nowadays, Sakaguchi focuses on his own studio, Mistwalker, where he works on creating new projects. Recent speculations suggest that Fantasian, an exclusive Mistwalker title for Apple Arcade, might be coming to PC, although there hasn’t been an official confirmation yet.

It appears that Final Fantasy 16 both meets and falls short of Square Enix’s goals. While the company initially expressed satisfaction with the game’s sales, last week’s reports indicate otherwise. Only time will tell how the game performs on other platforms when they become available.
