WhatsApp Testing Search Messages on Web Feature To Let You Fact-check Forwarded Messages

Since its beginning, WhatsApp has been struggling with fake news on its platform. To counter such news, the social media giant had already taken many steps to curb the spread of fake news. However, not all measures have emerged to be effective as people are still spreading fake news on WhatsApp. But now, the company has implemented a new feature on the same move to curb the spread of fake news on its platform.

WhatsApp has started testing a new feature that will allow users to search the forwarded messages on the Web directly from the app to check their credibility. This feature has been under development for a while, and it is expected to roll out sometime in the future.

This feature can be very helpful for millions of users around the world during the coronavirus pandemics to fact-check messages shared on WhatsApp. As mentioned above, this feature is still in its development phase, so, even if you have the latest beta of WhatsApp, you will not see this feature on it.

WABetaInfo reports that this ability to search messages on the Web has been spotted in the code of the latest beta version 2.20.94. WhatsApp displays a search icon next to forwarded messages, enabling users to tap on it and search the Web. When you do tap on it, a message pops up and it reads, “Would you like to search this on the Web? This will upload the message on Google.” When you tap on Search, it will paste the message on Google Search. Just hit on the Search icon on Google to search for the relevant data related to that message.

WhatsApp confirmed the existence of this feature. “We are working on new features to help empower users to find out more information about the messages they receive that have been forwarded many times. This feature is currently in testing, and we look forward to rolling it out in the near future,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

As mentioned above, this feature is still in its development phase, so you can expect to see it soon in the latest release of WhatsApp.
