WhatsApp Picture-in-Picture Will Let You Play Videos in the Background

Picture-in-Picture is not a new feature on WhatsApp. In fact, we all are using this PiP feature on WhatsApp Messenger to play YouTube Videos directly within the Chat. Now, WhatsApp is planning to launch even more upgraded WhatsApp Picture-in-Picture feature that lets you play Videos in the Background.

If we talk about the current Picture-in-Picture feature, it lets users watch or play YouTube Videos within the Chat. Users can also switch to another chat or can keep the chat on while still watching the video.

The new WhatsApp update for Android is adding a significant change to this Picture-in-Picture feature allowing users to play videos in the background. This means you can use different apps while watching videos from the WhatsApp Chat.

This new WhatsApp background play functionality is available for Android only and not for the iOS platform as of now. WhatsApp for Android got Picture-in-Picture feature in last year’s December month. Since then, the developers are trying to make it more advanced for the users.

According to a new report shared by WABetaInfo, this new Background Play feature will be made available with WhatsApp Beta 2.19.177. This update will be rolled out after 3 months for public users. This new PiP video will work fine with many online streamers such as YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. This means the links you share from Instagram, Facebook or YouTube will be played in the background.

Currently, the existing Picture-in-Picture feature works well within the WhatsApp Chat section only. You can switch between the Chat Window but can’t use any other app while watching your videos. When you close WhatsApp from your device, the video stops playing. But after this update, this won’t be a problem as you will be able to play the videos in the background even if you close the app.

There is no specific timeline announced by the developers of its stable version for now. What we know so far is that this Picture-in-Picture Background Play feature will be made available first for Android users with its Beta edition. So yes, if you are a beta tester then you will get this update to test out first. Stay tuned for more official information about the same.
