What that looks like in iPhones

Apple is now worth $2 trillion.

That’s more than double what it was worth just over two years ago when it became the first publicly traded U.S. company to surpass the $1 trillion mark.

Investors around the world own 4.3 billion shares each valued — for now — at more than $467.77 each. A company’s worth, or market valuation, is determined when those shares are multiplied by their stock price.

Back in August 2018, we marveled at just how big a trillion was. Since other tech titans — Microsoft, Amazon and Google — have also surpassed $1 trillion.

Just those four companies’ values combined now represent about 20% of the S&P 500’s value, according to S&P Global. The 10 most valuable companies are more than a quarter of the index — a level not seen in 40 years.

Apple’s rise has been driven largely by its wildly successful iPhone, which has been instrumental in shaping the mobile world we live in and is now a staple of daily life for tens of millions of Americans.

The figure of $2 trillion is so large it’s difficult to comprehend, so we thought perhaps showing it with $1,000 iPhone 11s might make it a bit easier.

Say you put those phones in a box that’s a 1-foot cube. If you didn’t put them in Apple’s snazzy packaging, you could cram at least 300 of them into the box. That’s a pretty expensive box full of phones — a little more than the median price of single family home. But, we’re just starting.

You could put 2,223 boxes full of iPhones in a 40-foot shipping container. The space inside isn’t optimal for a bunch of 1-foot cubes, but we could probably count on Apple to make some innovative half boxes.

At $667 million, that’s more than than the GDP of a small country. American Samoa’s and Dominica’s 2018 GDPs were $636 million and $596 million, respectively, according to the World Bank. But that’s still just a fraction of Apple’s worth.

Stacking 1,500 of those shipping containers together would get you the S&P 500’s fourth most valuable company: Google parent, Alphabet. But we’re only halfway there.

So what does $1 trillion look like in iPhones?

That’s a lot of shipping containers of phones. So what else could $2 trillion purchase? We’ve collected a few of them in this video.

Apple’s now worth $2 trillion. Here’s what else you could get for that money.

Apple just hit a historic milestone – a $2 trillion valuation. What else has a $2T price tag?

USA TODAY

Even with Apple’s 50% increase in share price during 2020 and subsequent increase in value, it still isn’t one of the biggest numbers in 2020.

If you combined the four COVID-19 stimulus packages passed by Congress in the past year, they amount to $2.5 trillion — up from $2.4 trillion in May — and a fifth package might not be far away.
