Del Rey UK and Random House Worlds have announced a collaboration with Marvel Entertainment to publish an adult novel series that continues the beloved Marvel tradition of “What If…?” storytelling.
Del Rey UK of Cornerstone and Penguin Random House UK have joined forces with Marvel Entertainment to release an adult novel series inspired by the classic “What If…?” concept. This officially licensed series explores unique twists on iconic Marvel origin stories, set in their own distinct universes within the Multiverse. Random House Worlds acquired the world English rights, followed by Del Rey UK acquiring the UK rights through Senior Commissioning Editor Kate McHale.
The first installment of the series, titled What If… Loki Was Worthy? A Loki And Valkyrie Story by Madeleine Roux, known for her Asylum series, is scheduled for release on March 12, 2024. It will be followed by What If… Wanda Maximoff And Peter Parker Were Siblings? A Scarlet Witch And Spider-Man Story by Seanan McGuire, set to publish in July 2024, and What If… Marc Spector Was A Host To Venom? A Moon Knight And Venom Story by Mike Chen, set for release in October 2024. Penguin Random House Audio will also release audiobook editions of all the novels.
WHAT IF…LOKI WAS WORTHY? A LOKI AND VALKYRIE STORY by Madeleine Roux:
Loki and Valkyrie embark on an epic multiversal journey, reimagining the origins of iconic Marvel heroes. In a realm filled with infinite possibilities, Loki, the trickster god, has always sown chaos. But what if Loki managed to save Asgard from Tony Stark’s vengeance? The death of Thor, the Son of Odin and wielder of Mjolnir, was Loki’s doing. What had started as a harmless prank – altering the course of Thor’s journey to Midgard by tampering with the Destroyer – quickly spiraled out of control, resulting in death and destruction in New York City.
Furious and heartbroken, Loki is banished to Earth by the All-Father. In this new realm, he finds himself living a meager existence, far from the grand courts of Asgard. His only engaging companion is Brian the Gecko, a true meeting of minds. Loki, the God of Mischief, knows that he never truly deserved to stand alongside Thor as Odin’s golden child, two legitimate sons of Odin.
However, Loki’s peaceful exile is disrupted when a Valkyrie, determined to fulfill her oath to Thor, arrives at his trailer-home with a message from beyond. Thor’s plea is for Loki to find Dr. Jane Foster and pass on Mjolnir to its rightful heir.
As Loki grapples with fulfilling his brother’s request, the consequences of his past actions come back to haunt him. Blinded by grief for the lives lost in Asgard’s chaos, Iron Man sets out on a path of revenge against those who consider themselves gods. Using Asgard’s own weaponry, he creates a lethal suit of armor with the intention of severing any connection between their worlds, consequences be damned. As Asgard looks to Loki for salvation, he must face the ultimate question: Is he truly worthy?
