Less than two months after the release of Wes Anderson’s critically acclaimed film, Asteroid City, in US theaters, the visionary director is already gearing up for his next project. Titled The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, this highly anticipated film is scheduled to make its streaming debut on Netflix on October 13th, following its premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

This anthology film is based on the collection of Roald Dahl’s enchanting short stories, taken from his book The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More. The film will consist of four delightful parts and will have a concise running time of just 37 minutes. This marks the second time Anderson has adapted Dahl’s work, following his critically acclaimed film Fantastic Mr. Fox in 2009. The star-studded cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch (known for his role as Doctor Strange), Ralph Fiennes (famous for portraying Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series), Dev Patel (renowned for his performance in Slumdog Millionaire), Ben Kingsley (notable for his role in Iron Man 3), Rupert Friend (known for his role in Hitman: Agent 47), Asa Jennings (set to appear in Sing 2), and Richard Ayoade (famous for his role in The IT Crowd).

Henry Sugar Heads Straight to Streaming

Anderson revealed that “by the time I was ready to start the project, the rights to the Dahl family’s works had been acquired by Netflix,” which meant that the film would bypass a theatrical release. However, the film’s short duration and Netflix’s ownership presented an ideal opportunity for its release. Anderson emphasized, “It’s not really a movie. It’s like 37 minutes or something.” Furthermore, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar will have its debut out of competition at the prestigious Venice Film Festival.

Mark your calendars for October 13th, when The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar will exclusively premiere on Netflix for streaming. Below, you can watch Collider’s interview with Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of Henry Sugar:
