Was GI Joe aware of the existence of Transformers from the beginning?

[Editor’s Note: Spoilers ahead for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts]

The confirmation of the existence of the G.I. Joe agency in the Transformers cinematic universe in Rise of the Beasts has piqued the curiosity of fans eager to see the two iconic Hasbro franchises come together on screen. During an exclusive interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, the movie’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared insight into how the two franchises are linked and teased the epic crossover that is in the works.

Rise of the Beasts is set several years before the first Michael Bay Transformers films and marks the beginning of a new trilogy centered around the Autobots and their new allies, the Maximals. In the movie’s closing moments, we learn that the G.I. Joe team watched the battle against Unicron (voiced by Colman Domingo) unfold and are excited to join forces with the Autobots to protect the world. However, it is not clear whether G.I. Joe has any prior knowledge of the Transformers or if they became aware of their existence during the events in Peru.

“I don’t know the answer to that, honestly. My instinct is – and we haven’t talked a lot about it because, like I said before, we don’t plan it exactly – the first time the Transformers have come onto their radar is when this battle occurred. They’re so good, they’re the only ones who really know that something else happened there. So, I don’t think so, but it doesn’t mean they haven’t found some along the way and they’ve been trying to figure it out. So, it’s one of the open-ended questions, really, that we have to figure out an answer to.”

The best way to ensure the success of Rise of the Beasts and the possibility of a sequel that includes a crossover with G.I. Joe is to focus on making the current movie profitable first. Nonetheless, the anticipation of seeing the two beloved franchises come together is simply irresistible.

After the first five live-action Transformers movies were panned by critics, the franchise continued to thrive at the box office with billions of dollars in revenue generated globally. However, with Transformers: The Last Knight‘s underwhelming performance, and Bumblebee finally earning the franchise the critical acclaim it deserved, the studio opted to take the franchise in a new direction.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is directed by Steven Caple Jr. and written by The Flash‘s Joby Harold, Darnell Metayer, and Josh Peters. These changes have resulted in a wave of positive reactions and with an exciting crossover with G.I. Joe on the horizon, the Transformers cinematic universe is set to receive a breath of fresh air.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is now playing in theaters. Check out Collider’s interview with director Steven Caple Jr. below.
