Activision Drops Sequel Status, Renames Warzone 2.0 to Just Warzone
Activision seems to have abandoned their plan to release a sequel to 2020’s Call of Duty Warzone battle royale game, opting instead for a simplified title. In the lead up to the Season 4 release, the company has been quietly rebranding Warzone 2.0 to just Warzone, as seen in official materials and even in tweets from Activision itself.

This rebranding comes alongside a new franchise logo which replaces the classic logo that was previously used in marketing materials for Modern Warfare 2019, Black Ops Cold War, and Vanguard. Though the naming situation is confusing, as some platforms still refer to the game as Warzone 2.0, the official word from Activision is that going forward, the game will simply be called Warzone.
Interestingly, this new title conflicts with an already existing game mode which uses the name Warzone. After the release of Warzone 2.0, the original CoD battle royale game mode was rebranded to Warzone Caldera. It remains to be seen how Activision will handle this situation and whether the original Warzone will be phased out in the future.
For now, though, players can expect more of the same content from the Warzone 2.0 game, with the added bonus of a new battle royale map in the form of Vondel, a mid-sized map reportedly based on Amsterdam.
Update: Activision Responds
Activision has confirmed the name change in a brief statement to Destructoid, saying, “Yes. Going forward it’s just Warzone.”
