Upcoming Microsoft Edge Will Also Support Chrome Extensions

Microsoft’s forthcoming Edge browser shall be based on Chromium. This browser shall come with support for the broad array of Chrome extensions. Kyle Alden, the project manager of the software uncovered the response to the query that everybody had on the Reddit thread for Windows 10. Alden said that it is their aim to get support for all the present Google Chrome extensions. He made this statement while answering a question regarding the functioning of the upcoming browser.

The comes as an amazing news for the ones who use extensions for bolstering privacy, boosting efficiency or for checking grammar or plagiarism. It is worth to notice that the intention does not actually indicate that Chrome extensions are bound to come to Edge.

Regarding the declaration of the new and improved Microsoft Edge a week ago, the company mentioned that the transformations for the browsing software may happen over an entire year, and well 12 months is a long time for several changes to occur. However, considering that the other browsers based on Chromium also provide Chrome extensions, and Microsoft does not seem to have any reason to break the trend.

In the Reddit thread, Alden also stated that the upcoming Edge will be rolling out to the Xbox One amongst all the other devices by the company.

Apart from this, the project manager of the browser discussed how the progressive web applications shall run on the upcoming Edge. Also known as PWAs, they refer to webpages that provide user experience that is comparable to the ones the mobile based applications offer. When talking about Chrome, Alden added that the crew wishes to support the installation of progressive web apps straight from Edge, apart from making them available in the Microsoft Store.

However, not everybody is excited about Microsoft switching to the open-source Chromium for Edge. Mozilla Firefox’s Chief Executive Office Chris Beard write a post wherein he criticized this decision and said it wasn’t good for competition.
