Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for Season 3, Volume 1 of The Witcher.
In a refreshing turn of events, The Witcher Season 3 kicks off with the three main characters finally together. After two seasons of building their family dynamic, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer are united in the first episode of the season. However, this trio is underutilized throughout the rest of the season, with only fragments of their interactions. This is a letdown considering the buildup in previous seasons.
The found family between Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer has always been the center of the show. Even though they didn’t interact until late in Season 2, their relationships are intricate and multi-layered. Yennefer yearns for a child, while Ciri desperately seeks a family. Geralt and Ciri’s relationship develops in Season 2, but there is still much more to explore. Unfortunately, this crucial moment for the characters is downplayed in the first part of the season, to their detriment.
From the beginning, it seemed like the relationship between Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer would be a significant plot point. Despite Geralt’s unresolved issues with Yennefer, they travel together, isolating themselves from others. They train Ciri and develop a bond with her, all while keeping their distance from each other. It’s almost like bitterly divorced parents attempting to co-parent. However, over time, their icy relationship thaws, allowing the family to grow.
Despite their initial unity, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer are soon separated yet again. They split into two groups, with Ciri and Yennefer going to Aretuza, while Geralt pursues their enemies. Although their pairings change in the subsequent episodes, the three are never together for more than a fleeting moment. This separation undermines the significance of their long-awaited reunion and fails to fulfill the promise of their collective storyline.
The lack of time spent together is the biggest flaw of this new season. After two seasons of anticipation, the characters should have had more consistent moments as a family. Their constant separation diminishes the impact of their development as a unit. When briefly united in the first episode, the exceptional qualities of Ciri, inheriting traits from both Yennefer and Geralt, become apparent. However, this duality is not explored further due to their continued separation. Furthermore, the ongoing arguments between Yennefer and Geralt dampen the family dynamic, hindering their individual character arcs.
The relationships among the three main characters are crucial to their personal growth, and yet, the show provides very little interaction between them. This dynamic, which is the highlight of the series, is overshadowed by the excessive division. With only three episodes remaining in the season, there is still a chance to rectify this issue, but much needs to happen to salvage the family relationship between Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. The Witcher Season 3 Volume 1 is now streaming, with Volume 2 premiering on July 27.
