Uncovering the Surprising Gameplay Twists of Mortal Kombat 1 in Hands-On Preview

Mortal Kombat 1 is heralding a new beginning for the franchise’s narrative, with Liu Kang, the Elder God, taking on a fresh outlook to protect the world. Trailers for the game have unveiled a plethora of changes, from Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s newfound blood-brotherhood to Mileena’s rise to power as Edenia’s queen over her sister, Kitana. The game’s mechanics also receive an overhaul as new moves add creativity that was lacking in MK11.

The focus on air combos is a game-changer, with every character equipped with new aerial tools that enable them to continue hitting opponents after certain launchers. Some combinations can also rebound off the wall and ground to add more damage. Players can now experiment with new possibilities, and with the addition of Kameo characters, who act as support-summons, the fighting scheme gets even wilder.

The Kameo characters, including Sonya Blade, Kano, and Jax, have custom movesets fitting their abilities in the franchise’s earlier games. They can be seamlessly added to combos, and their three moves depend on the direction players press on the D-pad. The Kameos have no limit to their use, but a cooldown timer prevents too many summons. The game’s fatalities are as gruesome as ever, with Kenshi’s finishing move seeing him drill his sword down his enemy’s throat before slicing them in half.

Despite being limited to four main roster characters and three Kameos in a 30-minute hands-on demo, the game’s creative potential shines through the gameplay. Come September 19, Mortal Kombat 1 promises infinite possibilities with the full main and Kameo roster. The revamped mechanics and new creative additions ensure a fresh start for the franchise’s future success.
