Twitter Implements Daily Limit on Number of Visible Posts for Users

Twitter has recently implemented limits on the number of posts users can view in a day. This decision comes as a response to the problem of excessive data scraping and system manipulation. It’s a notable move since social media platforms typically encourage users to spend as much time as possible on their platforms, gathering information about their preferences to deliver targeted ads. In an ironic twist, Twitter has become the first social media network to set a hard limit on daily post consumption, effectively locking users out after a certain threshold.

According to an announcement made by Twitter’s owner and former CEO, Elon Musk, the platform will now impose temporary restrictions on post reading. Verified accounts are allowed to read up to 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts are limited to 600. New unverified accounts have an even lower limit of 300 posts per day. Although the announcement doesn’t clearly define the distinction between “unverified” and “new unverified” accounts, it does state that the rate limits are temporary. A few hours later, these limits were increased to 10,000, 1,000, and 500 posts per day, respectively, for the corresponding user tiers.

In a comical twist, Elon Musk retweeted a parody account of himself, which mocked Twitter users as being addicted to the platform and portrayed Elon as doing a “good deed for the world.”

As a result of these limits, Twitter users have started to encounter a “Rate limit exceeded” error, freezing their timelines and preventing them from accessing additional tweets. Frustration is building, as users are instructed to wait and try again later. These errors are directly linked to the newly implemented rate limits on post reading.

Previously, Twitter had limits in place for various engagement actions, intended to discourage bots and spammers. However, these limits were fairly generous, and regular users rarely encountered any restrictions. The new limits are much more easily reached and essentially halt further usage of the platform. One major flaw is the lack of clarity regarding each user’s tweet quota and whether viewing the same tweet multiple times counts towards it once or multiple times. Additionally, users employing tools like Tweetdeck, which load multiple tweet lists simultaneously, will quickly reach their rate limits.

It’s important to note that not all users utilize Twitter in the same way. While many engage in lighthearted activities like sharing memes, others rely on the platform for serious purposes, such as accessing real-time news and verified information at both local and global levels. These rate limits significantly reduce the platform’s usefulness for these users. Moreover, everyone now requires a Twitter account to view tweets, and the number of tweets they can see in a day is limited unless they subscribe to Twitter Blue.

Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain a comment from Twitter as the platform no longer has a dedicated PR unit, and its press email auto-responds to inquiries with an emoji depicting feces.
