Trouble in Monique and Chris Samuels’ Marriage Had Always Been Evident

Monique Samuels, former cast member of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Potomac, has officially filed for divorce after 11 years of marriage. Throughout her time on the show, Monique aimed to promote a strong Black marriage and family, despite the doubts of her co-stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon. However, clues of trouble in paradise were evident during her appearance on Love & Marriage: D.C. and in her marriage to Chris Samuels.

Looking back on their time on RHOP, it becomes clear that the signs were always there. Monique often complained about shouldering the majority of the responsibilities in raising their children and managing their household. She also expressed frustration with Chris, claiming he was stagnant and somewhat controlling. Additionally, rumors circulated that Monique had developed a close relationship with her personal trainer. While the truth behind these rumors remains uncertain, fans now acknowledge that they overlooked key indicators.

Monique and Chris tied the knot in 2012 after seven years of friendship and a few years of dating. Though their relationship seemed harmonious, Monique’s involvement in RHOP in 2017 may have marked the beginning of the end. Even early on, she revealed to the cast that her birthday always brought difficulties for their relationship. This recurring tension on such a celebratory day should have been a major red flag. Robyn Dixon, known for her marital insights, tried to console Monique by attributing Chris’s self-centeredness to his former career as an NFL player. Monique accepted this explanation, but it was the first public indication of their relationship’s dysfunction.

Another issue that plagued their marriage was Chris’s mother’s disapproval of Monique. In a memorable moment on RHOP, his mother insultingly referred to Monique as a “heifer,” a deeply hurtful remark to the mother of her grandchildren. When Chris discovered his mother’s disrespectful words, he severed all contact with her. Furthermore, the couple experienced the devastating loss of a miscarriage before successfully conceiving their third child. Miscarriages often strain relationships due to the overwhelming emotional burden of grief and loss experienced by both partners.

As RHOP continued to film, new problems emerged, ultimately leading to Monique’s arrest for assault. Additionally, rumors began circulating in 2020 that Monique was unfaithful to Chris with her personal trainer. Monique vehemently denied these allegations, but the stress they caused undoubtedly affected their marriage.

Following their exit from RHOP, Monique and Chris were approached to star in the OWN series Love and Marriage D.C. Their appearance on the show only confirmed what viewers already suspected: their relationship was in turmoil. Monique frequently expressed frustration with Chris’s lack of assistance with their children and household chores. Throughout the first season, their unhappiness was palpable, with Chris appearing stoic and distant at the reunion. Bloggers even drew parallels between his demeanor and the concept of being trapped in the “sunken place,” popularized by the film Get Out. Ultimately, Monique and Chris announced that they would not be returning for the show’s second season.

The news of Monique filing for divorce did not come as a surprise to many, especially those who had observed their strained relationship on Love and Marriage: D.C. Monique opened up about their impending divorce during an Instagram Live session, acknowledging that it wasn’t solely Chris’s fault but also her own issues and traumas that contributed to the breakdown of their marriage. It’s commendable that she has taken the time to understand herself and work on her personal growth, considering the impact of childhood trauma on adult relationships. Moving forward, it is hoped that Monique and Chris can navigate the challenges of co-parenting their children, and may they find happiness and fulfillment in the future.
