The iconic presence of Stan Lee still pervades the comic book industry despite his retirement from Marvel Comics in the 1990s. Fans of the Marvel Universe will be excited to learn about a new documentary, set to be released on Disney+ on June 16, that honors the life and legacy of Stan Lee. The films premier is eagerly anticipated and follows a recently released trailer that provides insight into the man who helped create the stories that have dominated popular culture for decades.
The documentary was announced on what would have been Stan Lee’s 100th birthday and tells the story of one of the comic book industry’s most prolific names. Despite growing up during the Great Depression with little funds, Lee spent all his money to immerse himself in reading, commenting that “I would read everything I could get my hands on… and man, I felt as though I could go anywhere.” Lee’s love for escaping through reading was a significant influence in his work, co-creating characters that brought life to the Marvel Universe and provided millions with a place in which to escape through reading, as he had in his youth.
Starting out as an editorial assistant with Marvel in 1939 when it was known as Timely Comics, Lee went on to co-create characters such as the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and X-Men alongside his creative partner, Jack Kirby. He also collaborated with Bill Everett to conceive Daredevil and with Steve Ditko to create Doctor Strange and Spider-Man. Lee’s co-creation of these characters helped usher in a new shared fictional world, offering an escape for millions of readers just as reading had provided an escape for Lee as a young man.
Lee’s resurgence in popular culture began with Marvel’s foray into cinema, with his profile growing through cameo appearances in nearly every movie based on Marvel properties. Fans came to expect and love these appearances. Lee appeared in every Marvel Studios film until Spider-Man: Far From Home. These appearances included films produced by Kevin Fiege before the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Produced by David Gelb, Brian McGinn, and Jason Sterman, and developed by Supper Club and Marvel Studios, the upcoming documentary is highly anticipated. Genius Brands International worked as a co-executive producer, with Andy Heyward, the Chairman and CEO of the company, expressing excitement to honor Stan Lee’s 100th Birthday and celebrate his contribution as a “cultural icon.” The documentary promises to be an inspiring look into the life of Stan Lee.
The highly anticipated documentary, Stan Lee, is set to launch on Disney+ on June 16. Check out the trailer for the film below:
