The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a directive to all telecom operators to implement artificial intelligence and machine learning technology into their systems for the identification and prevention of Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) by unregistered entities. TRAI has given access providers 30 days to comply with the directive and report on the actions taken. The regulator defines UCC as unsolicited commercial communications sent without the consent or registered preference of the recipients. TRAI is concerned that unregistered telemarketers (UTMs) are still sending UCCs, which remains a significant source of inconvenience to the public, and can result in the fraudulent sharing of critical information between the unregistered and legitimate entities. TRAI also warned Principal Entities that failing to register their commercial SMS templates would prevent them from sending messages to customers.
