In a candid interview with Jay Shetty, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland bravely opens up about his battle with alcohol addiction. Holland reveals that he felt “enslaved” by alcohol before finally giving it up in 2022.
Holland admits, “I’m not shying away from it—I was definitely addicted to alcohol. It’s interesting, it wasn’t a sudden decision to give up drinking. After a very boozy December, like many Brits, I realized I could drink a lot. But all I could think about was having a drink. It scared me.”
After participating in Dry January in 2022, Holland decided to continue his sobriety journey until his birthday in June. The results were transformative. “By June 1, I was the happiest I’ve ever been. I experienced better sleep, improved problem-solving skills, and greater mental clarity. I felt healthier and fitter,” explains the actor.
This newfound clarity led Holland to question his relationship with alcohol. “Why am I so enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed with it?” Reflecting on the cause of his addiction, Holland confesses that the pressures of his work played a significant role. “I would attend work events, feeling unable to enjoy myself until I had a few beers. The pressure was overwhelming,” he shares.
Holland’s rise to fame as the MCU’s Spider-Man, starting with Captain America: Civil War, only deepened the hidden dark side of alcohol addiction. He explains, “Because it’s so socially acceptable, the addiction aspect can easily fly under the radar. Quitting alcohol has genuinely been the best decision I’ve ever made.”
Now sober for over a year and a half, Holland emphasizes that he has never felt better. “Once I truly felt the health benefits and regained my true self, I thought, ‘This is amazing.’ I’m not here to preach sobriety, but if I can inspire others to drink less, that would be wonderful,” he says.
