Threads shatters ChatGPT record on Facebook’s new app

Forget about ChatGPT, because there’s a new contender for the fastest 100 million downloads. It’s called Threads, and it’s the Twitter rival from Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook. Within just five days of its launch, Threads has already surpassed the impressive milestone of 100 million sign-ups. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement in a post on Threads. This achievement means that Threads has overtaken ChatGPT as the online platform with the fastest user growth. Since its launch on July 4th, Threads has been breaking records for its rapid expansion. It reached 100 million users much quicker than Microsoft-backed OpenAI-owned ChatGPT, which became the fastest-growing consumer app in history back in January, achieving the same milestone two months after its launch.
“That’s mostly organic demand, and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet,” stated Zuckerberg in the Threads post celebrating the milestone.
With the addition of celebrities, politicians, and other newsmakers, Threads is now recognized by analysts as the first major threat to Elon Musk’s microblogging app.
What Zuckerberg had to say
Zuckerberg himself proudly announced, “Threads reached 100 million sign-ups over the weekend. That’s mostly organic demand, and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet. Can’t believe it’s only been 5 days!” Instagram head Adam Mosseri also shared his excitement about Threads, expressing, “100 million people signed up for Threads in five days. I’m not sure I can wrap my mind around that fact. It’s insane; I can’t make sense of it. The team has been working extremely hard, but we know this is just the beginning. They say ‘make it work, make it great, make it grow.’ Well, we certainly did things out of order, but I promise we will make this thing great.”
Not aiming to replace Twitter
Mosseri emphasized that Threads is not intended to replace Twitter. He stated, “The goal isn’t to replace Twitter. The goal is to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter, as well as for communities on Twitter and other platforms that are interested in a less hostile environment for conversations. However, it won’t cater to all aspects of Twitter. Topics like politics and hard news will inevitably appear on Threads, just as they have on Instagram to some extent. Nevertheless, we won’t be actively encouraging those specific verticals,” he clarified.
