Threads brings back the Twitter bot that keeps tabs on Elon Musk’s personal aircraft

Jack Sweeney, a college student and the creator of the banned @ElonJet Twitter account that monitored Elon Musk’s personal jet, has launched the tracking project on Threads, a rival platform to Meta. Sweeney announced the arrival of ElonJet on Threads through a post on the new @elonmusksjet account, which currently has 80,000 followers as of July 10th.

In a direct message to Mark Zuckerberg, Sweeney addressed his second post on the @elonmusksjet Threads account and requested permission to remain on the platform. Sweeney also mentioned the @zuckerbergjet account in the Threads bio of @elonmusksjet, which is dedicated to tracking the location of Zuckerberg’s private jet. While the @zuckerbergjet account has not yet posted any live information, Sweeney has been actively tracking the movements of Zuckerberg’s jet on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram services.

The account tracking Musk’s jet was recently suspended and restored on both Threads and Instagram. Elon Musk suspended the @ElonJet Twitter account in December of last year, citing it as a “direct personal safety risk.” Prior to the suspension, Musk had declared that he would not ban the account as part of his commitment to free speech. Sweeney also operates several other trackers on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky, which monitor the flight paths of private jets belonging to notable figures like Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Jeff Bezos, and Kim Kardashian. These automated “bot” accounts created by Sweeney collect publicly available air travel data to track the locations of the aircraft. The associated Twitter accounts for these trackers were also suspended.

Before the suspension of his @ElonJet Twitter account, Sweeney had declined Musk’s offer of $5,000 to remove the tracker and instead requested an increased offer of $50,000, along with an internship. By calling out Zuckerberg, Sweeney appears to be provoking the Meta CEO to take similar action.

Sweeney still maintains a Twitter account that tracks Musk’s private jet, but now with a 24-hour delay in the information it provides.

Following the suspension of Sweeney’s @ElonJet Twitter account last year, Musk tweeted that any account revealing real-time location information of individuals would be suspended due to the violation of physical safety. Twitter’s policy regarding private information and media was also updated in December to specify that sharing publicly available location information is only permitted after a reasonable amount of time has passed. This update allowed Sweeney to create a new Twitter account to track Musk’s jet with a 24-hour delay.
