Google has rebranded G Suite into Google Workspace to provide a more “integrated experience”. Google Workspace will be taking on Microsoft’s Fluid components– which allows users to work on Microsoft’s Office features like tables, graphics, etc outside apps. While Google Workspace is similar to G Suite, it will sell plans to users that will offer a custom email for businesses which will include tools like Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Chat, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Sites, and more.
With the new Google Workspace, you can create a new Google Doc within the chat window itself and everyone in the chat group will automatically get access to the Doc. This integration makes it easy to make and share Docs with members of a group and you no longer need to separately create a Doc and share it with everyone in that group individually.
Also, instead of adding comments on Docs or Slides, you can actually start a Google Meet video from right inside the Doc or Slide with whoever is active on that particular document. This makes it easier to explain the contents of the Doc or Slide as you need not share tabs separately.
“In the coming months we’ll also be bringing this new experience to consumers to help them do things like set up a neighborhood group, manage a family budget, or plan a celebration using integrated tools like Gmail, Chat, Meet, Docs, and Tasks,” said Google.
The idea is basically to enable people to do more from inside their Gmail tab itself. In Docs, Sheets, and Slides, you can now preview a linked file without having to open a new tab. Also, when you @mention someone in a document, a smart chip will show contact details, including for those outside the organisation and suggest actions like starting a video call or chat.
When it comes to competing with Office, Google seems to have a slight edge with Google Workspace as we still don’t know as to when “Fluid components” will go mainstream for all Office users.
