This Iconic ‘Star Wars’ Outfit Started as a Rejected Kylo Ren Costume

The Significance of Star Wars Costuming

  • Star Wars is well-known for its distinctive and iconic production design and costuming, particularly the recognizable Stormtrooper uniforms.
  • Captain Phasma’s chrome outfit with a red-striped cape was originally designed for Kylo Ren but was included in the films due to producer Kathleen Kennedy’s insistence.
  • Although Phasma’s character potential was not fully realized, there is a possibility of her return in the future given the franchise’s tendency to bring back characters.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Star Wars media, regardless of critical reception, is its exceptional production design and costuming. The aesthetic is instantly recognizable and is synonymous with the Star Wars brand. Few costumes are as iconic as the Stormtrooper uniforms, which have left a lasting impression on generations.

Throughout the Star Wars saga, we have witnessed various iterations of the Stormtrooper design, from the Clone Troopers of the prequel trilogy to the menacing Shock Troopers. The standard white uniforms and identical helmets have become synonymous with the franchise, while higher-ranking individuals often don distinguished black ensembles. However, with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a new Stormtrooper look was introduced, diverging from previous designs.

Captain Phasma, portrayed by Gwendoline Christie, captivated fans with her striking appearance. Clad in a chrome suit and adorned with a flowing red-striped cape, Phasma’s design resembled that of the Stormtroopers but with notable enhancements. Interestingly, this design was initially intended for Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. However, director JJ Abrams deemed it unsuitable for Kylo Ren, yet producer Kathleen Kennedy recognized its potential and insisted on its inclusion in the final product.
